Which closure keeps the pillow in the case?

A tuck or an inside flap. Both fold back over the end of the pillow and hold it there, so the pillow does not work its way out while the bed is in use or while the linen is being handled.

Either one costs an extra layer of fabric and one more seam, and the laundry has more to press at the open end. A plain open end is quicker to make up and folds flatter, but nothing holds the pillow once the bed is disturbed.

Housewife or oxford?

Housewife is stitched close to the pillow with no border. Oxford carries a flat fabric border on all four sides. UK buyers usually ask for one or the other by name.

The border is fabric with no pillow behind it, so an oxford case is a larger finished piece and has to be pressed flat to sit square on the bed. Housewife gives the laundry less to press. Either style can be made in the same fabric as the rest of the bed.

How do you match pillowcases to sheets you already buy?

Send a sample of what you buy now. From the piece itself we read the fabric and the construction, which tells us more than a description does. If a sample cannot travel, send the blend, the thread count, the weave and the Pantone reference instead.

White is not one shade. Two whites dyed in different mills can read differently side by side on the same bed, so agree the Pantone reference before production starts.

How many covers per bed should you order?

That figure comes from your wash cycle, not from the pillowcase. Count the pillows on each bed, then decide how many complete changes you want moving through laundry, transport and reserve stock at any time.

Where you can, put the whole rotation on one order, so every case in it is made together. We keep your spec on file, so a repeat order is made to the same figures years later.

Who orders pillowcases in bulk?

Buyers who make up the same bed many times over. The case is changed far more often than the pillow under it, so it is ordered in rotation quantities.

• Hotels and serviced apartments, where the case has to read as part of the bed it is made up with.
• Hospitals and care homes, ordering to the pillows used on ward and resident beds.
